Common Driving Habits That Can Cause Car Accidents

Safe driving requires care and focus. But when we do it so often, we can become overconfident and develop bad habits. Dangerous driving behavior can result in devastating collisions, injuries, and fatalities on the road.

The following are several bad driving habits that can cause car accidents and how to break them:

  • Distracted Driving – Distracted driving consists of any activity which takes the driver’s eyes away from the road, hands away from the steering wheel, and/or mind away from the primary task of operating a vehicle. Cellphone distraction accounts for up to one in four car accidents in the United States. So whenever you are driving, avoid using your cellphone until you arrive at your destination.
  • Intoxicated Driving – One of the leading causes of car accident deaths is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These substances impair reflexes and reasoning, which why many drunk drivers overestimate their ability to drive safely or believe they will never get caught. If you have been drinking and need to drive, consider taking a cab or requesting a ride on Uber or Lyft instead.
  • Fatigued Driving – Driving while tired can be just as hazardous and risky as intoxicated driving. If you feel drowsy, take a 10-20 minute nap before getting behind the wheel. If you are driving and experiencing difficulty focusing, either have a passenger switch driving duties or pull over to take a short nap.
  • Speeding – The more speed, the greater the risk and severity of a collision. Speeding drastically reduces a motorist’s ability to maneuver and control the vehicle and increases the distance required to stop a vehicle. Always drive at or near the posted speed limit at all times.
  • Reckless driving – Whether it is tailgating (following behind someone too closely) or running a red light, aggressive driving behaviors are extremely common in the United States. According to the AAA, reckless driving is a factor in over half of all driving fatalities. Instead, always be on the defensive side by giving those around you ample amounts of space, obey the traffic laws, and remain vigilant for any unexpected situations.
